American Kaleidoscope is a social practice series informed by the survey responses of over 100 people as they were asked about their feelings and thoughts leading up to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Survey responses reviewed by Jones contained a variety of themes including anti-capitalism, idealism vs. reality, neighborliness, and political reform. These themes evoked images of the working class and their historic struggle and triumphs in the United States.
Inspired by the thought of working-class Americans, Jones gathered visual and historic inspiration from collage artist Romare Bearden and playwright August Wilson who both created art that celebrated and gave voice to 'regular working folk'.
This series of work reflects the heart of a hopeful people whose humanity has been forgotten as they struggle to maintain dignity, connection and hope. This series of work is an American Kaleidoscope; a thing that is neither good nor bad; that is broken and complete.
