Althea Jones
Multi-discipline Artist
Akron, Ohio
"I now know that, I am not a peacekeeper. There must be unrest before there is change."
-Althea Jones
Althea Jones is a multidisciplinary artist based in Northeast Ohio whose practice explores self-reflection, identity, human connection, and community building. Working across painting, photography, performance, and socially engaged art, Jones creates participatory experiences that invite people to examine their relationship to themselves and to one another.
Her practice is informed by a BA in Justice Studies from Kent State University and her ongoing pursuit of a BFA at the University of Akron. This intersection of art and justice shapes Jones’s interest in social systems, personal identity, implicit bias, and the ways individual experiences influence communities.
Jones is the creator of Skin Color, an ongoing interactive social-practice project that uses color matching and conversation to explore identity, self-love, representation, and implicit bias. Through her work, she seeks to transform personal reflection into opportunities for connection, dialogue, and collective understanding.
Her work has been exhibited throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond, and her community-based practice has been supported by ArtsForward and the Ohio Arts Council’s ArtsRISE program. In 2025, Skin Color was featured in national educational publications, extending the project’s conversations about race, identity, and representation into classrooms across the United States.
